Race Across Pennsylvania with Chocolate Milk
PHILADELPHIA — Chocolate milk will race across the Commonwealth from June 24 to 29 in conjunction with the Tour of Pennsylvania, a six-day, 450-mile bicycle race from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program will tout the post-exercise recovery benefits of chocolate milk during Highmark Healthy High 5 Finish Line Festivals along the race route.
“Drinking chocolate milk after your workout provides the optimal carbohydrate to protein ratio that your body needs to help recharge tired muscles,” said Althea Zanecosky, a registered dietitian and sports nutritionist for Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association.
Emerging research supports that chocolate milk is an ideal post-workout beverage because every serving contains the nutrition needed to promote effective recovery after exercise. These nutrients include carbohydrates to refuel muscles; protein to reduce muscle breakdown and stimulate growth; and fluid and electrolytes to replenish what is lost in sweat and to rehydrate the body.
While race spectators await the conclusion of the race at each stage, Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program will sample chocolate milk, distribute chocolate milk-flavored lip balm, and give away “Recharge with Chocolate Milk” helmet decals. Attendees can discover chocolate milk’s health benefits, both after exercising and as part of a healthy eating plan, and can register to win a new performance bicycle.
Schneider’s Dairy of Pittsburgh and Schneider’s Valley Farms Dairy of Williamsport are donating single-serve plastic bottles of chocolate milk that will be served at the festivals. In addition, Schneider’s has joined Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and participating CVS stores in a retail promotion that will run throughout June. CVS customers who purchase a gallon of Schneider’s white milk and a half-gallon of Schneider’s chocolate milk may enter to win a free, one-year YMCA family membership.
